Prof. Alfred M. BRUCKSTEIN


Alfred M. Bruckstein, Ollendorff Chair in Science, Technion, IIT, Haifa, Israel, freddy@cs.technion.ac.il

Alfred M. Bruckstein holds the Ollendorff Chair in Science at the Technion, IIT, in the Deppartment of Computer Science. A graduate of the Technion, with a BSc and an MSc in EE, he earned a PhD at Stanford University, in the EE Department, in 1984. Since then he is on faculty at the Technion, with long-term visiting professorship positions at Bell Laboratories at Murray Hill, NJ, USA (from 1987 to 2000), and at Nanayang Technological University, in Singapore (from 2009-present). His shorter visiting positions include Tsing-Hua University in Beijing, China (2002-2003), and visiting positions at Universite d'Evry, Paris France, at CEREMADE, University Dauphine, Paris, france, and Karlsruhe University in Germany. At the Technion, Professor Bruckstein served as the elected Dean of the Graduate School, from 2002 to 2005, and as the Head of the Technion Excellence Program for Undergraduates, from 2006 to 2012. He is a member of the MAA and AMS, and in 2014 he was elected Fellow of SIAM for contributions to Signal Processing, Image Analysis and Ant Robotic.

Prof. Barnabas BEDE

Dr. Barnabas Bede earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. His research interests include Machine Learning, Fuzzy Sets and Fuzzy Logic, and Modeling under Uncertainty.

He is a Professor of Mathematics at DigiPen Institute of Technology in Redmond, WA, USA, and he serves as Department Chair of Mathematics, and Program Director of the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in Machine Learning. Before that, he held positions at the University of Rio Grande Valley, Texas, the University of Texas at El Paso, the University of Oradea Romania, and Óbuda University in Hungary.

He has published more than 100 research publications, including three research monographs. His work has received more than 6000 citations according to google scholar. Current research interests include Explainable AI, investigating connections between Deep Neural Networks and Fuzzy Systems. He serves as the President of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society (NAFIPS) and as conference chair for the upcoming NAFIPS 2024 International Conference on Fuzzy Systems, Soft Computing, and Explainable AI, to be help in South Padre Island, May 27-29, 2024.

Ioana MOISIL received the M.S. degree in mathematics, speciality Elasticity from the University of Bucharest, Romania, a second speciality in Informatics for the technico-scientific domain from I.C.I Bucharest, Romania, the scientific degree from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, the senior researcher 1st degree from I.C.I. Bucharest and the Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from the " Gheorghe Mihoc - Caius Iacob" Institute of Mathematical Statistics and Applied Mathematics of the Romanian Academy.
In her 45 years of continuous activity she was expert instructor in informatics at I.C.I.Bucharest, senior mathematician at the "Carol Davila" University of Medicine, senior analyst programmer at the Ministry of Health, full professor at the " Lucian Blaga" University of Sibiu.
She published more than 140 research papers, participated as invited speaker and lecturer at several national and international conferences and courses. She was also project manager and scientific manager for many national and european research projects. Her main research interests were medical and nursing informatics and computer aided learning and instruction, but also decision support systems in healthcare.
She is currently retired but continue to collaborate as associate researcher with the RC-IIT of ULB Sibiu and with several scientific associations.
Ioana Moisil is the daughter of Ioan C. Moisil, brother of Grigore C. Moisil. She has a daughter, Anca Minculescu, that is Innovation and transformation manager, specialized in data application.

Răzvan ANDONIE received the M.S. degree in mathematics and computer science from University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and the Ph.D. degree from University of Bucharest, Romania. His Ph.D. advisor was Solomon Marcus, Fellow of the Romanian Academy. He is currently a Professor of Computer Science at both Central Washington University and Transilvania University of Brasov, Romania. He has published more than 130 research papers and was an invited professor at many universities. His actual research interests are computational intelligence techniques and applications, parallel/distributed computing, machine learning, and big data analytics.

Valentina E. BALAS is currently Full Professor in the Department of Automatics and Applied Software at the Faculty of Engineering, “Aurel Vlaicu” University of Arad, Romania.
She holds a Ph.D. Cum Laude, in Applied Electronics and Telecommunications from Polytechnic University of Timisoara. Dr. Balas is the author of more than 400 research papers in referred journals and International Conferences. Her research interests are in Intelligent Systems, Fuzzy Control, Soft Computing, Smart Sensors, Information Fusion, Modeling and Simulation.
She is the Editor-in Chief to International Journal of Advanced Intelligence Paradigms (IJAIP) and to International Journal of Computational Systems Engineering (IJCSysE), member in Editorial Board member of several national and international journals and is evaluator expert for national, international projects and PhD Thesis. Dr. Balas has edited or co-authored more than 200 books with Elsevier, Springer, CRC Press, and other publishing houses. She is the Series Editor for two book series with Elsevier: Advances in Biomedical Informatics and Advanced Studies in Complex Systems.
Dr. Balas is the Head of the Intelligent Systems Research Centre at Aurel Vlaicu University of Arad.
Dr. Balas is a member in the specialized committee "Computers, Information Technology, and Systems Engineering" of the National Council for Attestation of University Titles, Diplomas, and Certificates (CNATDCU) for the 2024-2028 term.
She served as General Chair of the International Workshop Soft Computing and Applications (SOFA) in ten editions organized in the interval 2005-2022 and held in Romania and Hungary.
Dr. Balas participated in many international conferences as Organizer, Honorary Chair, Session Chair, member of Steering, Advisory or International Program Committees and Keynote Speaker.
She is a member of European Society for Fuzzy Logic and Technology (EUSFLAT), and a Senior Member IEEE, member in Technical Committee – Fuzzy Systems (IEEE Computational Intelligence Society), chair of the Task Force 14 in Technical Committee – Emergent Technologies (IEEE CIS), member in Technical Committee – Soft Computing (IEEE SMCS). She is member in the Committee of IEEE Romania Section as Volunteers Training Coordinator and vice chair of IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Chapter – CIS 11. During the interval 2021-2022 she was a member of IEEE European Public Policy Committee Working Group on ICT. From May 2023 Dr. Balas is associate member of Romanian Academy of Scientists and from 2025 is corresponding member.
Dr. Balas was past Vice President (awards) of IFSA - International Fuzzy Systems Association Council (2013-2015), is a Joint Secretary of the Governing Council of Forum for Interdisciplinary Mathematics (FIM), - A Multidisciplinary Academic Body, India.
She is the recipient of the "Tudor Tanasescu" Prize from the Romanian Academy for contributions in the field of soft computing methods (2019) and “Stefan Odobleja” Prize from Romanian Academy of Scientists (2023 and 2024) and Diploma – Section Information Technology from The General Association of the Engineers in Romania (AGIR) 2023.


Dr. Attila FAZEKAS

Attila Fazekas received his M.Sc. degree in Mathematics from the University of Debrecen, Hungary, in 1992. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Mathematics and Computer Science in 1999, followed by his habilitation in 2004. From 2000 to 2002, he held a postdoctoral position at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He has been affiliated with the University of Debrecen since 1992 and has served as an Associate Professor since 2005.Prof. Fazekas’s main research interests include image processing and machine learning. He has also published extensively on topics related to multimodal human–computer interaction and medical image processing.He has authored or co-authored more than 130 scientific publications. His research achievements have been recognized with several awards, including the János Bolyai Research Fellowship and the Matsumae International Foundation Research Fellowship.From 2009 to 2013, he served as Chief Information Technology Officer at the University of Debrecen, and from 2013 to 2019, he was Vice Dean of the Faculty of Informatics.Prof. Fazekas is a Senior Member of the IEEE, a Member of the ACM, a Member of the John von Neumann Computer Society, and a Member of the Public Body of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He also served as President of the Hungarian Association for Image Analysis and Pattern Recognition from 2007 to 2011.
